Established as the Poona Stud Farm in 1946 by the late Soli A. Poonawalla, the Villoo Poonawalla Greenfield Farm is the leading thoroughbred stud in the country with "15 Champion Breeders" Awards to date. Over the years the Poonawalla Farm’s have broken records and rewritten racing history in India having bred 371 Classic winners to date, including winners of 10 Indian Derbies and 70 Indian Classics. It is the highest stakes earning establishment in the country with over 760 horses having earned stakes in excess of Rs. 1 million. The majority of yearlings produced each year are sold through private sale with the Poonawalla family retaining a handful for racing.
Dr. Poonawalla is considered an icon in the thoroughbred horseracing and breeding world and his contributions to Indian horse racing and breeding have won him top national and international awards. The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA - the world Apex Body) bestowed on him the “Lifetime Achievement Award” for his outstanding contribution in the field of horseracing and breeding. He has been elected vice chairman of the Asian Racing Federation and held various posts in the horseracing field that include chairman of Turf Authorities of India, Royal Western India Turf Club, Stud Book Authority of India and Pattern Races Committee.
